Unani Tibbi Congress elects Dr Mushtaque Ahmad as president and Dr Syed Ahmad Khan as secretary general; vows to galvanize the organization and make treatment more accessible across the country

NEW DELHI — The sole representative body of Unani physicians, All India Unani Tibbi Congress has re-elected current president Dr Mushtaque Ahmad for the second consecutive term of five-year. At a meeting held here, the general body elected Dr Mushtaque Ahmad unanimously which also reposed faith in the present Secretary General of Tibbi Congress, Dr. Syed Ahmed Khan.
Addressing the meeting after his election, Dr Mushtaque Ahmad said under the AYUSH Ministry, the Central Government has accorded Unani medicine its due place but its credit goes to Maseeh-ul- Mulk Hakim Ajmal Khan who was one of the stalwarts of India’s freedom movement. However, he lamented that certain state governments have been meting out Unani medicine step-motherly treatment. He pointed that some biased officials did not want Unani medicine to progress and prosper.
Dr Mushtaque Ahmad, who heads Department of Unani Medicine in Cape Town University of South Africa and is former Director of CCRUM, Hyderabad, urged the members and office bearers of the Tibbi Congress to galvanize the organization at the grass roots for protecting the interest of Unani Medicine.
“For the promotion and protection of Unani Medicine, every member should be active and alert at all levels as biased officers and administration tried to deprive Unani medicine and its physicians their due right”.
Dr. Syed Ahmed Khan, who was again unanimously elected as the Secretary General of Tibbi Congress for a five-year term, pledged that all efforts will be made to strengthen the organization at every-level, so it can serve interest of Unani system and its practitioners in an effective manner.
He urged the Unani Hakims (Physicians) to shun the inferiority complex as Unani system is one of best traditional systems of medicine having no side-effect. However, we need to adopt new technologies and research to uplift the standard of Unani system, he said. Dr Ahmad, who is an Assistant Director at CCRUM in Delhi, also said that the names of state unit presidents and office-bearers at the central-level will be announced within a month.
The general body meeting was chaired by former Dean of Unani Faculty, Aligarh Muslim University Prof Afzaal Ahmad who said it is heartening to see that young blood is joining the Tibbi Congress and it augurs well for the future of the Unani Medicine. He also expressed satisfaction over the unanimous election of president and general secretary of the Tibbi Congress.
