NEW DELHI – The iconic Hammam Wali Masjid, nestled in the heart of Old Delhi’s Lal Kuan area, is at risk due to the covert construction activities by the notorious building mafia.

Besides the mafia greed, official apathy is also responsible for endangering the very existence of the ancient mosque. Despite several missives from local community members to Delhi Waqf Board, deputy mayor, and local councilor, the menacing construction process persists unchecked.

The clandestine endeavours of the tenant, backed by the influential builder mafia, have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future of the historic mosque. Efforts to halt the unauthorised construction have hit a roadblock as authorities turn a blind eye to the plight of the aggrieved community.

Despite complaints registered with the CEO of the Delhi Waqf Board prompting an investigative team to inspect the site, they were thwarted by locked gates and relentless construction activities inside. Despite assurances of stringent action, no concrete steps have been taken to halt the impending threat to the mosque’s sanctity.

The brazen disregard for religious sanctity is evident as excavations dangerously encroach upon the mosque’s surroundings, posing an imminent danger to its structure. Despite widespread apprehension among the Muslim community, the builder mafia continues to operate with impunity, shielded by a veil of silence and complicity.

The apathy displayed by local authorities, including Deputy Mayor Aaley Muhammad Iqbal and Councilor Muhammad Sadiq, has exacerbated the community’s concerns. Despite appeals for intervention, their inaction has emboldened the perpetrators to persist in their nefarious agenda.

The desecration of the mosque’s premises, compounded by the conversion of adjacent spaces into non-Muslim establishments, further underscores the systematic erosion of religious identity and heritage. Shockingly, complaints lodged against these flagrant violations have been met with indifference, perpetuating a climate of impunity for those responsible.

It has also come to light that the very individuals entrusted with safeguarding the mosque’s interests have succumbed to coercion and vested interests, turning a blind eye to the community’s plight. The collusion between local authorities and perpetrators of religious desecration has laid bare the systemic rot plaguing the administration.

As the specter of irreparable damage looms large, the fate of the Hammam Wali Masjid hangs in the balance, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action to preserve its legacy for future generations.
