NEW DELHI – Social media on Tuesday was abuzz with a chorus of demand to free Dr. Kafeel Khan, who has been booked under National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly delivering a hate speech during a protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Aligarh on December 12, 2019.

People from all walks of life participated in the twitter storm and demanded freedom for the suspended lecturer of Gorakhpur’s BRD Medcial College. He was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in Mumbai.

Social and political activist Yogendra Yadav, giving the testimony of the inculpability of Dr. Kafeel Khan, wrote on his twitter handle, “I was next to Dr Kafeel when he delivered his speech at the Aligarh Muslim University. Show me one line in his speech that is against our country, our constitution or any community. So, why is he in prison? #FreeDrKafeelKhan”.

The contribution of Dr. Kafeel Khan during the oxygen crisis in the Gorakhpur Hospital had brought applause to him. He is known for his sincere medical duties and love and care for kids.

Saqib Malik, State President of SIO, Gujarat, tweeted, “A selfless doctor can’t be a threat to national security. This madness should stop now. All Indians need to Stand with Dr Kafeel #DrKafeelWantsJustice #DrKafeel_ko_RihaKaro”

Members of the medical fraternity have also expressed their solidarity toward the philanthropic doctor. National President of Progressive Medicos & Scientists Forum (PMSF) Dr. Harijit Singh Bhatti said on twitter, “Dr Kafeel Khan, a humanitarian paediatrician, is in jail for the last 5 months. I request everyone to support him with #FreeDrKafeel Our society needs doctors like him and he should be in the people & not in jail.”

“The medical fraternity stands with Dr Kafeel Khan. The witch hunting of a doctor who always held the ethics of public service high and was there for every public health emergency from Gorakhpur incident to Bihar floods. We urge @myogiadityanath govt to #freekafeelkhan”, said Dr. Pooja Tripathi on her twitter handle.

The disparity in law has become a new normal under the regime of Bharatiya Janata Party. The police administration is fulfilling the vested interests of their political masters.

Khushboo, a commoner, wrote, “Social activists & students are arrested mostly for their speeches but Kapil Mishra and Anurag thakur saying coercive slogans like “Desh ke gaddaro ko goli maro ….’ (Shoot the traitors) are free. Why are they free while others are in jail? #freekafeelkhan #FreeAllPoliticalprisoners”.

Mohammed Habeeb Ur Rehman, an engineer, said the real culprits and hate mongers are roaming around freely. He cited the example of Dr. Aarti Lalchandani of Kanpur. She was caught on camera spewing hate against Muslims but no serious action was taken against her. It seems, Muslims in the state are subjected to oppression due to their identity.

“Dr.Aarti Lalchandani of Kanpur calls COVID+ve Muslims as terrorists & wants govt to send them to solitary confinement is roaming freely, while Dr Kafeel khan who saved lives is languishing in jail. “Your name matters in India”, Habeeb Ur Rehman wrote on twitter.
