NEW DELHI — Netizens on Thursday, October 14, launched an online campaign demanding justice for UAPA detainee Atikur Rahman. They contended that it is the Uttar Pradesh government’s legal responsibility to protect his life and provide money for his treatment. #SaveAtikurLife and #ProvideMoneyForSurgery trended Twitter as part of the campaign.

“UP Government’s vengeance must be brought to the public domain,” the statement read while pointing out the delay by jail authorities in providing medical treatment to Atik.

The 27-year-old suffers from a serious heart condition and his family and lawyers are demanding immediate surgical intervention. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on October 8 advised Rahman to undergo surgery costing around 2 lakh. He also needs 10 units of blood for the surgery. He was taken back to the jail after a check-up.

His health condition had worsened when he was being taken to Lucknow to present in (Prevention of Money Laundering) PMLA court for hearing in connection with the case under UAPA.

Rahman suffers from Aortic regurgitation- a cardiac problem that develops when the aortic valve in the heart does not shut securely enough. Heart failure is the most dangerous consequence that might occur as a result of this condition.

He is a PhD scholar who has been associated with Campus Front of India, a student organisation. He was arrested last year by Uttar Pradesh Police along with Journalist Siddique Kappan, Masood Ahmed and cab driver Alam. They were on their way to meet the family of a gangrape victim.
