NEW DELHI: The much-touted Opposition unity, said to be key to a successful attack on BJP in the coming Lok Sabha polls, was at display again here on Thursday.
Leaders of various Opposition parties gathered under the banner of former Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Yadav’s Sanjhi Virasat Bachao – an initiative to protect Constitution and counter communalism.
Eminent figures featured the event at the Talkatora Stadium included: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, NCP General Secretary Tariq Anwar and JD-S General Secretary Kunwar Danish Ali.
In his speech, Sharad Yadav, who left JD-U after Nitish Kumar toppled Grand Alliance government in Bihar, joined hands with BJP and formed new government in July last year, thanked all leaders of opposition parties who participated in the program.
Given attendance by more than 7000 people at Talkatora Stadium, it has given message that people want communal harmony & growth of this country, said Yadav.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi said: “Whether it is 2019 elections or local elections, opposition parties have decided to unite and defeat BJP and its ideology.”
“We don’t intend for a “BJP-mukt Bharat”, but we want to show them that our ideology is strong, sustainable and will defeat their ideology,” said Congress chief referring to BJP’s Congress-mukt Bharat slogan.
