Community leaders and rights advocates demand action after a video purportedly shows a Muslim youth being humiliated by cow vigilantes in Barabanki
BARABANKI — A video from Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district has sparked outrage on social media after some self-styled cow vigilantes forced a Muslim youth to bow before a calf and subjected him to verbal abuse and physical intimidation.
The incident, which has drawn condemnation from members of the Muslim community, political leaders and civil rights advocates, is being widely shared online. Those criticising the incident have demanded strict action against the individuals involved and called for a thorough investigation.
According to claims that started circulating on social media on Sunday, the cow vigilantes accused the youth of making objectionable remarks about a cow. The group reportedly confronted him, abused him and contacted his father by telephone, during which offensive language was used.
The controversy gained attention after a video of the incident began circulating on social media platforms.
According to those sharing the footage, the youth apologised during the confrontation. However, critics allege that despite the apology, he was verbally abused, physically assaulted and compelled to bow before a calf.
The video has generated strong reactions online, with many users describing the alleged treatment as humiliating and unacceptable.
Several social media users argued that no individual or group has the right to punish, threaten or publicly shame another person outside the framework of the law.
The allegation that the youth was forced to perform a gesture of submission before a calf has attracted particular attention from members of the Muslim community.
Community representatives noted that, in Islamic belief, acts of prostration or worship are reserved for Allah alone.
Local Muslim leaders said that if the allegations are confirmed, the act would amount not only to humiliation but also to interference with an individual’s religious beliefs.
A community member familiar with the matter said, “Nobody has the right to force another person into an act that violates his religious convictions. Any disagreement should be dealt with through legal and constitutional means.”
Members of the Muslim community and rights advocates have called on the authorities to identify those involved and take legal action if wrongdoing is established.
Many social media users tagged Barabanki Police and demanded an investigation into the incident.
In response to queries regarding the matter, Barabanki Police acknowledged online discussions surrounding the video.
However, when contacted directly, a representative from the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Barabanki, reportedly stated that the department had not yet received formal information regarding the incident.
Officials have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the video or the circumstances surrounding it.
The incident has also drawn a political response.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain called for a fair and impartial investigation into the allegations.
He urged the Uttar Pradesh government to take strict action against any individuals found responsible and ensure that no group is allowed to take the law into its own hands.
Commenting on the incident, Hussain said that such acts were not expressions of genuine faith but actions that undermine human dignity and constitutional rights.
He argued that allowing vigilante groups to intimidate or humiliate citizens without fear of consequences raises serious concerns regarding law and order.
The incident has renewed discussion about the activities of self-styled cow protection groups and the limits of citizen action in matters involving allegations related to cattle.
Legal experts point out that enforcement of the law is the responsibility of the police and authorised government agencies, not private groups or individuals.
Rights advocates have stressed that any allegation of wrongdoing must be addressed through due process and legal procedures rather than public punishment or intimidation.
They argue that regardless of the accusation involved, every citizen is entitled to dignity, legal protection and a fair hearing.
As the video continues to circulate, pressure is mounting on authorities to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Community organisations have urged police to verify the authenticity of the footage, identify those involved and determine whether any criminal offences were committed.
For now, the case remains under public scrutiny, with many calling for accountability and reiterating that disputes should be resolved through the rule of law rather than vigilante action.
