GUWAHATI – A team of West Bengal Police’s CID is now in Assam to collect CCTV footage and other proof in connection with the arrest of three Congress MLAs of Jharkhand, who were nabbed with huge quantities of cash in Howrah district on July 30 evening.
Police officials in Guwahati said that the Bengal CID team has collected CCTV footage from the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati and a hotel.
“The Bengal CID team has been in Guwahati since Tuesday. We are extending all kinds of cooperation to them. This is a very funny matter that a section of the media reported that the Assam Police detained the Bengal CID team due to non providing of the FIR of the case,” a senior police official said.
On Saturday evening, the three MLAs — Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kacchap and Naman Bixal Kongari — were nabbed by the police at Howrah’s Panchla, with the cash in their vehicle.
The MLAs told the police that the cash was meant for purchasing sarees from the wholesale market at Burrabazar in central Kolkata to distribute in their constituencies on the occasion of the forthcoming World Tribal Day. The MLAs and two of their associates, arrested with them, including the driver, have been remanded to CID custody till August 10.
The Congress on Sunday suspended three MLAs accusing them of conspiracy to topple the state government. The matter rocked politics in Bengal, Assam, and Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, the Bengal CID said the Delhi Police restrained them from conducting raid in Chanakyapuri — the residence of Siddharth Majumdar, who is allegedly connected to the case.
The West Bengal CID tweeted on Wednesday, “In course of investigation of PanchlaPS Case No 276/22, a team of CID which had gone to Delhi to execute search warrant issued by Ld Court has been stopped from doing their lawful duty on the direction of @DelhiPolice.”
It further said, “The case involves seizure of huge cash from 3 MLAs of Jharkhand. Detaining & preventing the CID WB team to conduct lawful search will lead to disappearance of crucial evidence by the suspects responsibility of which will lie on the DP officers who prevented the search.”
