NEW DELHI — Sticking to its decades-old principled position over Palestine, India on Thursday while defying US President Donald Trump’s threat voted in favor of Palestine.
India stood along with 127 countries that rejected Trump’s unilateral move to declare Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Assam’s top Muslim politician and two-time Member of Parliament Badruddin Ajmal went to Twitter to thank the government and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. In response, what Sushma said just set the micro-blogging site on fire.
“Thanks Government of India for voting in the UN against US decision of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,” tweeted All India United Democratic Front chief Ajmal at 9:24 PM on Friday (December 22). The Lok Sabha Member from Dhubri (Assam) tagged Sushma Swaraj in his tweet. His tweet got 844 likes, 234 retweets and 138 comments.

In just one hour, Sushma replied. “Thank you Ajmal Sahib. Now you vote for us.” Her tweet went viral and got 9.6k likes, 1.9k retweets and 2.0k comments.

A look at the comments shows a large number of people did not like India’s stand and many of them went ahead and targeted Sushma herself. But many others appreciated the decision.
Here are some of them:
— Was the decision of voting in UN against US/Israel to impress Muslim voters?
– हम इजराइल से अपने संबंधों को कैसे भूल सकते है ? क्या अज़मल साहब “हिन्दू राष्ट्र” बनाने के लिए वोट देंगे ? किस वोट की मांगकर रहे हो आप ?
— This lady wanted (to) become Prime Minister of India. Thanks God, India was saved. If we have such Foreign Minister we don’t need Pakistan to destabilize India. Really ashamed of this appeasement policy of Sushma madam.
— Israel is important or India? Israel is important or rest of the world? It’s not about Arab’s. It’s about our mother land.
— Not for Muslim voters but we have good relations with Middle East in every sector of Businesses and Jobs.
