Former Lawmaker ‘Murdered’ Over Land Dispute in UP’s Lakhimpur

 NEW DELHI – A former lawmaker died during a scuffle over a land dispute between two parties in Lakhimpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

The police said Nirvendra Kumar Mishra alias Munna, a three-time Member of the UP Legislative Assembly was declared dead when he was brought to hospital. According to the post mortem report released late on Sunday night, the former MLA died of a heart attack and there were no injury marks on his body, local reports said.

His son Sanjeev Kumar was also seriously injured during the incident. Mishra was an independent legislator for two terms and was elected once on the Samajwadi Party ticket.

The police registered a murder case and arrested the two accused in the case.

The family held the last rites of Mishra only after the District Magistrate (DM) assured them of action against the CO. Reports cited the DM saying that the suspension of CO has been recommended by the government.

IG Laxmi Singh who visited the spot hours after the incident said that the role of the CO would be investigated and that the report would be submitted by the investigation team in three days. Beat cops in charge of the Paraspur outpost were suspended.

Reports added that the DM has also constituted a committee to investigate the land dispute.

On Sunday, two sides clashed over the land dispute in Trikoulia Padhuwa falling in Sampurnanagar police limits.

The two sides clashed in which the former MLA was attacked. He died while on his way to hospital.

The disputed land is close to a three-way junction. On Sunday, men from the opposite side arrived on the spot to capture the land. This land was also claimed by ex-MLA Mishra and the matter is under consideration in Palia tehsil. On getting information about the possession attempt, Mishra went to the spot and protested which triggered a scuffle. The former MLA suddenly fell unconscious and he was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

SP Satendra Kumar, while clarifying after the incident, said that the former MLA died due to a fall during the dispute. The matter is being investigated.

Samajwadi Party leader and former CM Akhilesh Yadav condemned the attack and said that the incident had sent shock waves in UP.
