Youths Opt to Observe Modi’s Birthday as Unemployment Day

NEW DELHI — On Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated the 70th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi but the occasion was chosen to observe National Unemployment Day by the youths of the country.

It is an irony that a PM who promised ten crore jobs during his tenure but his birthday is being observed as National Unemployment Day. Youths and student organisations took to social media to express their dismay over the promises that fell flat on the ground of reality.

Besides political and known figures, a large number of netizens took to Twitter to mark September 17 as National Unemployment Day and the trend has gone viral.

Posting a clip from a newspaper that gives an account of the available jobs in the country (less than 2% of the aspirants), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted justifying the reason to observe National Unemployment Day. “Employment is dignity. For how long will the Govt deny it?” reads the tweet.

The National President of All India Students Association (AISA), N. Sai Balaji, said that the unemployment rate was the highest in independent India. “The government has nothing to ease the crisis during the pandemic-induced lockdown. Migrant workers and salaried people have lost their jobs”, he said during a telephonic conversation.

Lately, the government has put a ban on recruitment of employees. Balaji said that the move was ‘unfortunate’ and it showed the hypocrisy of the government. “The government takes the examination for the job but never declares the results of the aspirants”, he said and added that he suicide rate among unemployed youths was at its peak.

Balaji told Clarion India that the AISA movement would be continued with the demand for an Urban job guarantee scheme like MNREGA for the rural areas.

The National President of the Indian Youth Congress Srinivas BV, extending his best wishes to PM Modi, tweeted that for the first time ever, youth was forced to observe the birthday of a Prime Minister as National Unemployment day.

Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh pleaded with PM Modi to take due care of the rights of farmers and consumers and withdraw the anti-farmer-consumer ordinance. He also made a request to provide employment to the unemployed.

The #NationalUnemploymentDay trended at Number 2 on Twitter. Netizens uploaded photos and videos of their protests demanding employment.

JNU Students Union president Aishe Ghosh tweeted about how crores of youth lost their jobs in the past few months despite the current government promising two crores of jobs every year.
