NEW DELHI — On Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated the 70th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi but the occasion was chosen to observe National Unemployment Day by the youths of the country.
It is an irony that a PM who promised ten crore jobs during his tenure but his birthday is being observed as National Unemployment Day. Youths and student organisations took to social media to express their dismay over the promises that fell flat on the ground of reality.
Besides political and known figures, a large number of netizens took to Twitter to mark September 17 as National Unemployment Day and the trend has gone viral.
Posting a clip from a newspaper that gives an account of the available jobs in the country (less than 2% of the aspirants), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted justifying the reason to observe National Unemployment Day. “Employment is dignity. For how long will the Govt deny it?” reads the tweet.
यही कारण है कि देश का युवा आज #राष्ट्रीय_बेरोजगारी_दिवस मनाने पर मजबूर है।
रोज़गार सम्मान है।
सरकार कब तक ये सम्मान देने से पीछे हटेगी?Massive unemployment has forced the youth to call today #NationalUnemploymentDay.

Sai Balaji, said that the unemployment rate was the highest in independent India. “The government has nothing to ease the crisis during the pandemic-induced lockdown. Migrant workers and salaried people have lost their jobs”, he said during a telephonic conversation.
Lately, the government has put a ban on recruitment of employees. Balaji told Clarion India that the AISA movement would be continued with the demand for an Urban job guarantee scheme like MNREGA for the rural areas.
