NEW DELHI – Amidst the chaotic backdrop of the historic Chandni Chowk locality in Old Delhi, a team of doctors and volunteers has been administering crucial medical aid to the less fortunate for over three decades. Situated in front of the historic Red Fort, the area has become a sanctuary for those in need, offering solace and healing to the homeless and impoverished.

Each morning, as the sun begins to rise, streets become alive with sounds of bustling activity. Amidst the throngs of rickshaw pullers and labourers, the selfless efforts of these individuals shine brightly, providing a beacon of hope for those who have nowhere else to turn.

One such beneficiary, Naresh, a 45-year-old rickshaw puller, speaks of the relief he finds in the care provided at Chandni Chowk. “I don’t have the strength to make it to a hospital,” he said, “but here, I receive treatment free of cost and without the long waiting time.”

Another recipient, Laxman Das, whose feet have suffered for years, expresses gratitude for the ointments applied by the volunteers. The treatment has proved an alternative to the drastic measure of amputation suggested by doctors in government hospitals.

At the helm of this noble initiative stands Sardar Terlochan Singh, affectionately called ‘Broomman’ of Chandni Chowk, who initiated this mission in 1989. Alongside his sons and a dedicated team of volunteers, including Dr. Tahir and his wife, they offer critical medical aid to those who cannot afford traditional healthcare.

Kanwaljit Singh, one of the volunteers, sheds light on the diverse range of individuals they serve, emphasising the substantial number of homeless individuals in Delhi, many of whom suffer injuries due to unsafe working conditions.

Dr. Tahir underscores the inclusive nature of their service, stating, “Regardless of religion or background, we serve the oppressed. We provide immediate medical assistance to those who cannot access hospitals when required.”

These unsung heroes work tirelessly, providing first aid, medications, and even arranging surgeries for those in dire need. Their unwavering dedication embodies the true spirit of humanity.
