AMROHA – A troubling incident at Hilton Convent School in this Uttar Pradesh city has sparked widespread outrage after a seven-year-old Muslim student was expelled for allegedly bringing non-vegetarian food for lunch. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has ignited accusations of discrimination and Islamophobia against the school administration.
The controversy began when the school’s principal, Avnish Mishra, reportedly suspended the student after a heated exchange with the child’s mother. The confrontation, captured on video, has since gone viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from various quarters.
In the video, the student’s mother can be heard adamantly denying the accusation that her child brought meat to school. “My son did not bring non-vegetarian food in his tiffin,” she insists. However, Principal Mishra remained firm, stating that the school does not permit students who bring non-vegetarian food, further alleging that Muslim students “intend to destroy Hindu temples.” These comments have been widely condemned for promoting harmful stereotypes.
Samiullah Khan, a social activist from the Muslim community, expressed his dismay at the situation. “The principal’s behaviour was not only unjust but also discriminatory,” he stated. “This is a clear example of the deep-rooted hatred that some people harbour against Muslims. We cannot allow our children to be subjected to such bigotry.”
The incident has quickly escalated into a larger communal issue, with members of the Muslim community protesting the school’s actions. In response to the public outcry, the District School Inspector has ordered an investigation into the matter, forming a three-member committee to look into the allegations.
“We have taken this issue very seriously and will ensure a thorough investigation,” said a representative from the District School Inspector’s office. “No child should face such treatment in an educational environment.”
The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the treatment of Muslims in the country, with many pointing out that this is not an isolated case. Similar incidents of discrimination against Muslim students have been reported in other parts of Uttar Pradesh and other states, leading to concerns about the safety and well-being of minority communities in the region.
Social media platforms have been inundated with comments condemning the school’s actions. The video of the argument between the principal and the child’s mother has been widely shared, with many expressing shock and anger at the principal’s remarks. “This is not just about a lunchbox,” said a local resident. “It’s about the growing intolerance and prejudice that Muslims are facing every day. We need to unite against this injustice and ensure that our children are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
As the investigation continues, the Muslim community in Amroha is urging parents to remain vigilant and demand fair treatment for their children in schools. There are also calls for the establishment of more Muslim-run schools to ensure that children receive an education that respects their cultural and religious identities.
