NEW DELHI — A Muslim youth was beaten to death by a mob of Dussehra revelers in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district.

Irshad Mohammad (25) died on Tuesday evening after he was assaulted by the mob after the victim’s bike reportedly hit a man celebrating Dussehra. The incident took place on the outskirts of Luhari village, media reports reaching here said on Wednesday.

With tensions running high in the village, additional police force has been deployed to ensure that the incident did not lead to further trouble.

According to the police, Irshad Mohammad was returning to Luhari village on his bike and while passing the Ramlila ground on the outskirts of the village, his bike hit a man who had come to the place with his friends to take part in the Dussehra festivities.

The minor accident led to a verbal row which soon turned violent after a group of people beat Mohammad, who fell to the ground and hit his head on a stone. He was rushed to the local hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, a report in The Indian Express said.

As news of Mohammad’s death reached the village, his family members and locals rushed to the spot. Both groups attacked each other. The elders from the village informed the Bahadurgarh police station and the police used mild force to chase away members from both communities.

“We have identified five people who have beaten Irshad and they will be arrested soon. A First Information Report (FIR) in this connection has been lodged at the Bahadurgarh police station. Adequate police force has been deployed at Luhari village to ensure that the incident does not lead to further trouble,” Hapur Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma was quoted as saying.
