MORADABAD – In a move sparking both debate and dissent, eight Muslim councilors from Nagar Panchayat in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh announced their affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. The decision of the independent councilors has ignited a wave of criticism, particularly within the Muslim community.

The backdrop of this development is BJP’s concerted efforts to bolster its political clout ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Under the guise of a statewide campaign, the party has actively courted leaders from diverse political backgrounds, aiming to consolidate its influence across the political spectrum.

The ceremony marking the councilors’ induction into BJP ranks, held at a private banquet hall in Agwanpur Sheruwa Dharampur of Kanth Assembly, witnessed the presence of MLC Gopal Anjan and District President Akash Pal. While the event was meant to showcase unity and strength of the party, it has instead fueled discontent among those advocating the interests of the Muslim community.

Critics argue that aligning with the BJP, a party often accused of marginalising minority communities, undermines the principles of secularism and inclusivity.

The decision is being viewed as a betrayal of the very constituents they were elected to represent.

Voices within the Muslim community have condemned this move, highlighting the BJP’s controversial track record concerning minority rights and communal harmony. The decision to join BJP, they assert, sends a troubling message and raises questions about the councilors’ commitment to safeguarding the interests of their community.

Amidst the controversy, Anshul Gupta, the District Coordinator of the BJP’s Cultural Cell and the organizer of the event, defended the party’s outreach efforts. However, the dissenting voices, including community leaders and concerned citizens, remain steadfast in their criticism, calling for greater accountability and adherence to the values of pluralism and social justice.
