NEW DELHI — An uneasy calm prevails in Motihari city of Bihar state on Tuesday after several persons were injured in clashes between two groups during the Mahaviri yatra on the occasion of Nag Panchami on Monday.

The violence was triggered when a group of people organised a Mahaviri march in the village. They reportedly were demonstrating lathis with loud devotional songs when people from another group pelted stones at them.

Soon, the situation turned ugly and the clashes left many injured including three Policemen. However, Police acted swiftly and used a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Police said the situation was peaceful now and a close watch was being kept on the developments. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nand Parsad has also appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony and participate in the procession peacefully.

According to Police officials, the situation is peaceful now. “We are keeping a close eye. I request everybody to participate in the Mahaviri Yatra peacefully,” the SDPO was quoted by media reports as saying.

Prohibitory orders were imposed by the administration and adequate security has been deployed.

Around six persons were admitted to Sadar Hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.

Earlier in Bagaha, around 12 people were injured in a similar clash during the Mahaviri march on Monday.
