SURAT – Tension gripped Surat’s Sayedpura area during Ganesh Utsav after an alleged stone pelting incident at a Ganesh pandal led to widespread unrest. The incident, which occurred in the Lalgate area of the city, sparked immediate protests from the local Hindu community, with hundreds gathering outside the Sayedpura police station to express their outrage.
Eyewitnesses reported that a mischievous youth allegedly threw stones at the Ganapati mandap, igniting anger among the locals. In response, the Surat police acted swiftly, arresting six individuals directly involved in the stone pelting, along with 27 others accused of inciting the violence. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi confirmed the arrests, stating, “Today, we received news of stone pelting at the Ganesh pandal in Sayedpura. The police immediately arrested six people involved, as well as 27 others who were instigating the incident. We will take firm action against anyone who disturbs the peace.”
The situation prompted a strong response from the authorities, with a heavy police deployment in the area to prevent further escalation. The local MLA also arrived at the scene to help manage the situation. Recognising the seriousness of the incident, the administration has intensified security measures across Surat, with police patrols increased to ensure no further outbreaks of violence.
“Considering the gravity of the situation, we’ve deployed additional police forces and are closely monitoring the area to maintain order,” said an official from the Surat Police.
The Home Minister reassured the public that the administration is fully alert and ready to respond to any further disturbances. “We appeal to the residents to maintain peace and allow the police to carry out their duties. Any attempts to disturb the harmony will be dealt with strictly,” he added.
As of now, the area remains under tight security, with the police urging the community to stay calm and refrain from actions that could incite further tension. The situation is currently reported to be stable, with authorities keeping a close watch to ensure the safety and security of all residents.
