HYDERABAD — Bereft of proper treatment, the poor in Telangana are finding it hard to cope with the coronavirus pandemic. With cases of covid-19 reaching closer to one lakh in the state, there is no substantial improvement in the medical infrastructure.

Telangana Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan also noticed the wide gap between the testings, the treatments and the recoveries. She even wrote to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and made suggestions not once but 6 to 7 times but received no response from him which has dismayed her.

Being a doctor, Dr. Soundararajan suggested that more tests should be done as per the guidelines of the WHO (World Health Organisation). In the recently-held cabinet meeting, it was decided that about 40,000 tests would be done daily but this is not happening.

The Governor also said that her suggestions were not taken in the right spirit and that projecting wrong numbers is not going to help. Her concern is for the people of the state because getting tested is their basic right.

She also said that the medical infrastructure in the state was poor with shortage of doctors, nurses and beds for people coming from the districts for treatment.

She even tweeted on 18 August asking the state government to go for more tests:

Covid tests were not done as per the need, thus facilitating the government to lie to the world that there are fewer positive cases whereas the truth is that many people were turned away with only about a few hospitals authorised to do the testing. Though the state took on a defensive stand in the beginning, now the government has increased the number of hospitals and even authorised private labs to conduct the tests from July.

An ex-MLA of BJP wrote a letter to the Governor on August 20 requesting her to write to the Union Government and send a report of the covid-19 situation in the state. He wants the report to mention that the CM has been hiding the true figures of Covid-affected persons, thus misleading everyone. Apart from that, even the teams from the Centre that visited Telangana were misled due to the wrong figures. By hiding the facts, the CM is risking the lives of the people, the former lawmaker said in his letter.
