Suicides by Daily Wage Earners Doubled in Last Six Years

 NEW DELHI – In 2019, 32,563 daily-wage earners, including four transgenders, died by suicide in India, the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said.

This forms 23.4% of the total cases in distribution of suicide victims by profession during 2019 which is double than six years ago. Daily-wagers were followed by self employed persons and unemployed persons.

The data show that 1,39,123 died of suicide in 2019 which is a 3.4% increase compared to 2018. Out of this, 97,613 were males. Moreover, the rate of suicides has increased by 0.2% during 2019 over 2018.

The data reveal that 66.2% (92,083) of suicide victims in 2019 were having an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh, and 29.6% (41,197) of suicide victims belong to the annual income group of Rs 1 lakh to less than Rs 5 lakh.

A total of 41,493 females committed suicides during 2019, with housewives accounting for the highest number (21,359), followed by students (4,772) and daily-wage earners (3,467).

Seventeen transgenders committed suicide in 2019; 4 each were unemployed persons and ‘daily wagers, respectively, 2 were self-employed persons, one was a students’ while six others fell under the ‘Other’ category.

The western state of Maharashtra topped the list of suicides in 2019 as it accounted for 18,916 suicide deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu (13493) which reported the highest daily wage earners’ deaths(5186). This was followed by Maharashtra (4128)

A majority of suicides committed by housewives were reported in Madhya Pradesh (2,938 out of 21,359 suicides) followed by Maharashtra (2,737 suicides) and Tamil Nadu (2,025 suicides) which accounted for 13.8%, 12.8% and 9.5%, respectively, of total such suicides during 2019.

Most of suicides by government servants were reported in Tamil Nadu (200 out of 1,684 suicides), followed by Maharashtra (186), Rajasthan(166), Karnataka (135) and Madhya Pradesh (132) which accounted for 11.9%, 11.0%, 9.9%, 8.0% and 7.8% of total such suicides respectively.

A majority of suicides committed by persons engaged in private-sector enterprises were reported in Maharashtra (1,807 out of 8,730 suicides), Tamil Nadu (1,237), Gujarat (776), Karnataka (749) and Madhya Pradesh (688), they accounted for 20.7%, 14.2%, 8.9%, 8.6% and7.9% of total such suicides, respectively.

Of the total suicides committed by students, 14.4% were reported in Maharashtra (1,487 suicides) followed by 9.0% in Madhya Pradesh (927), 8.8% in Tamil Nadu (914, 6.5% in Karnataka (673) and 5.8% in Uttar Pradesh (603). As for the majority of suicides committed by unemployed persons, 14.0% were in Kerala (1,963 out of 14,019 suicides), 10.8% in Maharashtra (1,511, 9.8% in Tamil Nadu (1,368), 9.2% in Karnataka (1,293) and 6.1% in Odisha (858). A majority of suicides committed by persons engaged in business activities were reported by Maharashtra (14.2%) and Tamil Nadu (11.7%).

More unmarried women (21663) committed suicides than unmarried men (11202).
