NEW DELHI – International Federation of Trade Union, while hailing successful resistance of the residents of Shaheen Bagh to “arbitrary and illegal” demolition drive by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), urged the authorities to stop the exercises.

A press release issued by the federation’s Delhi committee pointed out that the demolition drives are being carried out in poor and lower middle class localities where people are eking out a living from small shacks, pavements and pushcarts.

Terming the demolition drives anti-people IFTU said the bulldozer with a communal edge is and disrupting normal economic activity which does not augur well at a time when common people of Delhi are yet to recover from the economic blows they have received from the Covid pandemic and the ill advised lockdowns.

The federation alleged that the exercise was being conducted under the direction of the Central government “as it  controls Delhi Police and also the MCD where the BJP is in majority”.

The IFTU lauded the way people of Shaheen Bagh came out in droves “peacefully” against the bulldozers “reflecting the position of common people of this city for right to livelihood and peaceful existence”.

They demanded that the voice of working people be heeded, the demolition drive be called off and all affected compensated. All those detained at Shaheen Bagh should be released, asked IFTU.
