SIT to Probe Killing of Five Meitei Muslims in Manipur

IMPHAL –  A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been tasked with inquiring into Monday evening’s firing at Lilong Chinjao in Thoubal district even as the death toll in the incident rose to five after one of the injured succumbed to his injuries.

Md Abdur Rajaq, who received critical bullet wounds, breathed his last at a private hospital on Wednesday. A Lilong resident, Rajaq was a key functionary of Anjuman, a local anti-drug body.

Four Meitei Muslims were shot dead after a group of armed miscreants attacked them at the Lilong town Monday evening. Residents alleged the attack was by Arambai Tenggol, a radical Meitei group. At least fifteen others were injured in the attack.

Rakesh Balwal, Senior Superintendent of Police of Thoubal signed the order for the SIT probe to be headed by Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Md Riyajuddin Shah, a report in The Indian Express said on Thursday. The progress into the investigation of the case should be appraised to the SP twice daily, the order said.

SDPO N. Suresh Singh, Inspector Masood and sub-inspectors Md Anwar Hussain, S. Bhubon Singh and N. Thomas Singh, serving in the valley district, form the probe panel.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the incident predominantly settled by Meitei Pangals (Meitei Muslims) agreed to claim the bodies to perform the last rites.

In this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the JAC and the state government in the presence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh at his office complex on Wednesday.

The MoU, among others, agreed to provide a suitable government job to the next of kin of the five deceased and three seriously injured as well as Rs 10 lakh each to the deceased families and Rs 2 lakh each to the seriously injured and another Rs 1 lakh each to other injured.
