NEW DELHI — In a groundbreaking development, a Scheduled Caste (SC) official is to take over as chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board on September 1. The official, Satish Kumar, would make history as the first official from this section to occupy this prestigious position. His appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of Indian Railways, reflecting both progress and inclusivity.

Kumar’s career in the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) has been nothing short of exemplary, with over 34 years of dedicated service that has led to substantial advancements in railway operations, safety, and innovation. His journey began in March 1988, and since then, he has played pivotal roles in various key projects across different railway zones and divisions.

Kumar’s academic credentials are as distinguished as his professional achievements. He holds a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, and has furthered his education with a Post Graduate Diploma in Operation Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). His technical expertise and continuous pursuit of knowledge have been instrumental in his successful career.

One of Kumar’s most significant contributions to Indian Railways is the development of the Fog Safe Device, an innovative technology that significantly improved train operations during foggy conditions. This device has become crucial, especially in northern India, where dense fog during winter poses serious challenges to railway operations. The Fog Safe Device has substantially reduced the risks associated with low visibility, earning Kumar widespread recognition and praise.

Kumar’s career has been marked by several key roles, including his tenure as Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway from April 2017 to April 2019. He later served as Senior Deputy General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer of North Western Railway, Jaipur, before being appointed as the General Manager of North Central Railway, Prayagraj, in November 2022.

His leadership in these roles has consistently focused on enhancing efficiency, safety, and innovation in the railway system. Kumar’s appointment as Member (Traction and Rolling Stock – MTRS) of the Railway Board further solidified his influence in overseeing critical aspects of traction and rolling stock in Indian Railways.

The announcement of Satish Kumar’s appointment was made by senior officials of the Railway Board on Tuesday, with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approving his new role.

Kumar’s new role comes with the highest pay scale of Pay Level 17 as per the Seventh Central Pay Commission, reflecting the significance and responsibility of his position.

His appointment as chairman and CEO of the Railway Board is expected to bring a new vision and innovative strategies to further modernise and expand India’s railway infrastructure. His vast experience, coupled with his dedication to public service, positions him as a key figure in shaping the future of the railway network in India.
