NEW DELHI – Disturbing reports of renewed violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have surfaced, with claims that more than 200 Muslims have been killed by Buddhist militants and soldiers since 5 August. Shocking videos circulating on social media depict the tragic aftermath, with bodies of children, women, and the elderly strewn along beaches.
One user on the social networking platform X, known as “The Muslim,” has been sharing these harrowing images and videos since 6 August. In one post, he wrote, “Massacre, more than 200 Rohingya Muslims were martyred.” The videos suggest that drone and artillery attacks by the Arakan Army in Mengarda Township, located in Rakhine State, have led to the deaths of hundreds, including women and children.
In another post on 6 August “The Muslim” highlighted the ongoing atrocities, stating, “Nakba continues, the massacre of Rohingya Muslims has come to light again in Arakan State, Arakan Army killed more than 200 people in Mongarda city in August. Thousands of people are on the way to cross the Naf River.”
He shared further alarming videos, including one that shows Buddhist militants allegedly attacking Rohingya Muslims. “Buddhist terrorists have started massacring Rohingya Muslims so that Rohingyas will be wiped out from Arakan,” they claimed in the video caption. Another video shared on the same day depicts the aftermath of drone strikes, with “Rohingya Muslim children affected by the massacre by the Buddhist Arakan Sena in Mongarda, Arakan State, northern Myanmar.”
The brutality of these attacks is further underscored by reports of sexual violence. On 6 August, “The Muslim” shared a photo claiming that “a Rohingya Muslim woman was gang-raped and murdered by the Buddhist Arakan Army.”
On 7 August, additional reports emerged of attacks targeting Rohingya Muslims attempting to flee the violence. “At eight o’clock on the night of August 5, a group of Arakan terrorists dropped a bomb using a drone on a group of Rohingya Muslims who were fleeing to Bangladesh by boat. Two boys, all the others, including children and women, lost their lives except for the video showing people pulling out the bodies on the beach,” The Muslim wrote.
The atrocities did not end there. The following day, The Muslim shared more photos and claimed, “A new front has been opened in the religious war against Muslims. The bodies of five Rohingya Muslims have been found on Teknaf Beach, brutalised by a Buddhist terrorist group. They were victims of violence.”
The plight of the Rohingya continues, with The Muslim reporting on 8 August that “Rohingya Muslims have no way to survive, their homes and lives have been destroyed by Buddhist terrorists, the Arakan Army and military power. Waiting for help to come and save them.”
A particularly chilling account was shared by a Rohingya journalist and a university student, Azim Khan, who reported on X that “decomposed bodies of Rohingya Muslims killed by Buddhist terrorists were found on Marine Drive beach.”
