NEW DELHI – Modern-day Delhi is dotted by its rich culture, heritage, history, and monuments. But now it seems to be holding little or no space for historical events as the younger generation is more inclined to love and enjoy the fast-paced cosmopolitan city.

To bridge the growing gap between the present generation and the rich cultural heritage and introduce youths to the legacy of Urdu poetry and literature, the Shankar Lal Murli Dhar Society is all set to organise the much-awaited 54th edition of Shankar Shad Mushaira (poetic evening) on Saturday, 11th March.

After a lull due to Covid-19 pandemic, the program will be live for the first time this year. Poets from all over the country are taking part in the grand evening and they will also engage in a vibrant exchange of ideas.

Some of the best contemporary poets like Javed Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi, Prof. Waseem Barelvi, Ms Minu Bakshi, Munawwar Rana, and many more celebrated personalities will regale the audience with their poetic rendition.

The poetic evening is being organized to commemorate the memory of Sir Shankar Lal and Sh. Murli Dhar of the DCM Conglomerate, who were known for their contribution to the social, educational and cultural life of New Delhi and were also enthusiastic patrons of Urdu poetry.

“The Shankar Shad Mushaira which takes place annually is one of its kind and was initiated by the society in 1954 as a platform for eminent poets of the subcontinent to participate and showcase their work and literary talent”, said one of the organisers.

Ever since its inception, this particular event has also proved to be one of the strong knots between India and its neighbouring country, Pakistan.

For decades, prominent Urdu poets from Pakistan and the entire subcontinent participated in the Mushaira regularly but due to the existing geo-political situation, many names continue to be missing from this regular fixture.

The legacy of this event is a rich tradition that dates back to centuries. It has played an essential role in preserving and celebrating this heritage. “This valued cooperation of literary giants is an attempt to preserve Urdu language and further enrich India’s cultural space. Shankar Shad Mushaira in itself is an institution of vital importance in Urdu literature,” the organiser added.
