JAIPUR – Because of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, the Rajasthan government has ordered the closure of all meat shops across the state. The decision, aimed at maintaining a “pious atmosphere” during the ceremony, was announced by the Department of Local Self-Government.

Director of the Local Self-Government Department, Suresh Kumar Ola, issued directives in this regard to commissioners and executive officers of all municipal corporations, municipal councils, and municipalities in the state. According to the orders, on the day of the consecration of the Ram Temple, all slaughterhouses and meat and fish shops are to remain closed.

Earlier, the government had declared January 22 as a dry day, with all liquor shops in the state set to be closed. In addition to these measures, the Rajasthan government has also declared January 22 as a half-day holiday.

The Pran Pratishtha ceremony involves the installation of the Ram idol in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum, built on the ruins of Babri Masjid which was demolished by Hindutva outfits in 1992.

The government’s decision to close meat shops has generated mixed reactions. Supporters believe it will contribute to a more solemn atmosphere for the ceremony, while critics argue that it is discriminatory and infringes on the rights of meat-eaters.

This move has sparked a broader debate on the role of religion in public life in India. Some argue that the government should refrain from interfering in religious matters, while others contend that the government has a responsibility to promote religious harmony.
