NEW DELHI — Danish Siddiqui, a Reuters photojournalist from India, covering the war in Afghanistan was killed during clashes in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar, Afghanistan news outlet Tolo News reported on Friday.

Siddiqui, a Pulitzer Award winning photographer, was embedded with Afghan Army when his unit came under attack from the Taliban, said reports.

Danish graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. He had a degree in Mass Communication from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia in 2007.

He had been associated with Reuters as a photojournalist since 2010. Before that he was a Television news correspondent.

Danish Siddiqui was the first Indian journalist to win the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Siddiqui was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for his coverage of the Rohingya issue.

Sidiqui was at the forefront of the media in documenting India’s 2nd wave of Covid-19 pandemic, bringing out visuals of the unprecedented health crises for which he drew the ire of Hindu nationalist trolls for “defaming” Modi government.

The killing of Siddiqui comes, Tolo news said, as the Taliban captured Spin Boldak district in Kandahar this week. Fierce fighting has been underway in Kandahar, especially in Spin Boldak, for the last few days.
