NEW DELHI – Reacting to Congress Secretary Harish Rawat’s statement over Ram temple, Popular Front of India demanded from Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to explain the party’s position on the Ayodhay issue and the statement made by Rawat.
Recetnly, Rawat said that the Congress will build Ram Temple if it comes to Power. “On two previous occasions, the Congress made sincere attempts to build the Ram temple when it was in power. We will sincerely launch efforts to build the Ram temple if we come to power,” Mr Rawat told reporters in Dehradun.
“Such an objectionable statement to come from a top leader of the largest secular party in the country is both shocking and disappointing. Since it is the second statement from him of the same nature, it cannot be viewed as a mistake,” said the Front in its press statement released on 25 February.
The Front demanded from the Congress to make it clear that “whether the Congress party endorses or rejects the remarks made by its general secretary”.
The Front wants disciplinary action against Rawat if the Congress does not subscribe to Rawat’s statement. “If Congress president chooses to reject Harish Rawat, the nation wants to know what disciplinary action would be taken against Rawat for openly going against the party policy,” said PFI’s chairman E Abubacker.
When Rawat was asked whether his statement is the party’s official stand. He said “My statement regarding the Ram temple was widely reported in the media. There is no denial from the Congress.”
The Congress, however, did not clarify its stand on Rawat’s remarks. It is yet to see any official reaction from the party.
