NEW DELHI— A 22-year-old aspiring model and social media personality is battling for life in hospital after he was allegedly beaten up by police in Surat, Gujarat.

Samir Ansari, a college student, who is locally popular on Instagram is admitted in a private hospital in coma due to brain haemorrhage.

The family alleges that cops from Umrao police station beat up Ansari ruthlessly on July 22 night while he was out sipping coffee at a roadside coffee shop with his friends.

His brother Tanveer Ansari told Clarion India that policemen detained his brother for not wearing a face mask, a violation of Covid protocol. He had an argument with police over the mask, he said.

“Then they took him to an isolated place where they thrashed him so much that he received grievous injuries in his head.Since then he is in a coma,” alleged Ansari. “They have beaten him with sticks and planks.”

The police, however, have a different theory to tell. An official at Umrao police station confirmed the detention of Samir for not wearing a face mask but said that family allegations are a lie. “He was injured as he jumped from the police jeep to escape,” the police officer said.

He was taken to the hospital by policemen without clothes, said Sarwar, a family friend. “There were no dust or scratches to show he was injured while jumping from the jeep. Instead we saw red marks of beating by sticks,” he retorted, refuting the police theory. “They had removed Samir’s shirt because he had vomited on it when they had thrashed him.”

The family is now demanding action against the policemen who they allege beat up Samir. Though a top police official of the area has met the family and assured them of a probe and justice. “A lady police officer met us yesterday (Wednesday). She was nice and gave us hope,” said Sarwar. The Umrao police station official also confirmed that the matter is being probed by higher police officials.

Social media has erupted in outrage over the police action with netizens running a hashtag #justiceforSameer.

Surat City Police said in a tweet on Thursday evening that an offense in this matter has been registered in the concerned police station.
