NEW DELHI — All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to postpone Delhi University examinations scheduled on Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), May 28. He said the university’s decision to hold exams on the festival reflects a biased attitude towards the Muslim community.
In a post on X addressed to the minister, Owaisi said, “Sir Dharmendra Pradhan, kindly ensure that the exams are postponed. Delhi University is showing a biased attitude towards Muslim minorities. Will they also say the same thing when festivals of other communities are celebrated?” He also shared a video of students protesting outside the campus.
On Wednesday, a student moved the Delhi High Court challenging the university’s decision, even as the Union government had declared a public holiday for the occasion.
The petition stated that despite the official holiday announcement, the university arbitrarily decided to proceed with the examinations. It further argued that the decision violates the rights of Muslim students under Articles 14 (equality before law), 21 (protection of life and personal liberty), 25 (freedom of religion), and 29 (cultural and educational rights of minorities) of the Constitution.
However, the university later assured the High Court that a special examination would be conducted on July 4 for students who miss their semester exams due to Bakrid. But Students are not satisfied with the university’s submission and have continued their protests, arguing that appearing for exams at a later date would put them at a disadvantage and could delay their results.
The All India Students’ Association (AISA) has also demanded an immediate rescheduling of the exams and greater transparency from DU authorities, urging the university to uphold “secular, inclusive values.”
