NEW DELHI – Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) asked the United Nations (UN) to intervene in matters of hijab ban and genocide calls against Muslim minority in India.

The OIC move came in the wake of the ongoing hijab row whereby Muslim students are forced to remove hijab to get entry into schools/colleges in Karnataka. The genocide call given for the first time at a paradoxically called dharma sansad (religious parliament) in Haridwar echoed at all subsequent religious assembly in the country.

In a series of the tweets on Monday, the global Islamic body also flagged online of auction of Muslim women as also recurrent hate crimes against Muslims in the country.

In a joint communiqué, The OIC said, “The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (#OIC) expresses deep concern over recent public calls for #genocide of #Muslims by the ‘#Hindutva’ proponents in #Haridwar in the State of #Uttarakhand…and reported incidents of harassment of #Muslim #women on social media sites as well as banning of Muslim girl students from wearing #hijab in the State of #Karnataka”.

Many schools and colleges in the state southern of Karnataka as well as other Indian states have barred hijab-wearing girls from entering their respective educational institutions. What’s more, Muslims girls and women are being forced to remove their hijab at the entrance of schools and colleges before allowing them to enter. The move has drawn massive outrage, both within the country and abroad.

Karnataka High court, which is hearing the hijab ban case, has also come in for severe criticism for prohibiting girls from wearing hijab in its interim order.

Taking serious note of the developments in India, the world Islamic body has urged the international community, especially the United Nations, to take cognisance of the matter and initiate deterrent measures in this regard.

“The #OIC General Secretariat calls upon the international community, especially the #UN mechanisms and Special Procedures of the #HumanRights Council, to take necessary measures in this regard,” said the OIC.

It also called upon the Indian government “to ensure the safety, security & wellbeing of the #Muslim community while protecting the way of life of its members & to bring the instigators & perpetrators of acts of violence and hate crimes against them to justice”.

Not just the OIC, there are other international Islamic bodies which took note of the persecution of Indian Muslims. Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) asked their government as well as the international community to put pressure on the Indian government to stop demonising minorities before widespread pogroms resulting in loss of innocent lives and properties.

Denouncing the genocide calls given at Haridwar’s Dharam Sansad and the bid on the life of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi by rightwing Hindutva activists in Ghaziabad, AFIC Dr Rateb Jneid said, “In recent years, we have seen the lockdown of the state of Jammu and Kashmir (started 5 August 2019), the Delhi riots, the beating and the killing of many innocent people by Hindu Zealots motivated by the ideology of the governing BJP government and its political party’s militant arm the RSS. The Modi Government has destroyed the social fabric of India through manipulating the faith-identity of the majority. The Modi Government must be stopped before it is too late”.

Urging the Australian government to lead in protecting Indian’s minorities, he said, “If we don’t, then we will be complicit through silence for all the blood that is shed and the pain that is inflicted. Once more violence starts, we will see an influx of refugees coming to our shores far greater than anything that we have seen before, we will not be able to cope and the neighboring countries will not be able to cope. Let’s act now before it is too late”.

Unfortunately, the genuine concerns from the international forum for the citizens of the country evoked a cold and insensitive response from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Striking a defiant position, the ministry, said, “We have noted yet another motivated & misleading statement from the General Secretariat of OIC on matters pertaining to India. Issues in India are considered and resolved in accordance with our constitutional framework and mechanisms, as well as democratic ethos and polity”.

Earlier, the MEA reacted in a similar fashion when a Congressional Briefing from the US taken up the issue of safety and security of the Muslims in India.

Attributing to the OIC move to an unsubstantiated charge of communal mindset of the OIC Secretariat, the MEA said, it “does not allow for a proper appreciation of these realities. OIC continues to be hijacked by vested interests to further their nefarious propaganda against India. As a result, it has only harmed its own reputation”
