NEW DELHI — After a seven-year-long trial, four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder have been hanged before dawn on Friday. The execution of the death warrant was largely welcomed on social media. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in an interview to ANI, said, “We have loopholes in our systems that help culprits go scot-free.”

Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission Women, while talking about such system flaws, urged the central government to build a system that brings culprits to justice within a short time-frame after the commission of the crime.

Ruling BJP leaders endorsed the verdict on twitter. Jyotiraditya Scindia, who joined the BJP lately, tweeted, “At last, justice prevailed for #nirbhaya. A moment to introspect for the nation. Also sends out a stern message –  crimes of violence against women are not just unacceptable, but will also be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law!”

Minister for road transport & highways Nitin Gadkari said in his tweet, “Nirbhaya has gotjustice. Let us always remember that anyone who outrages the dignity of women will not be forgiven. Let us create #NewIndia where every woman is respectedand given equal opportunity.”

Congress leader Alka Lamba welcomed the verdict but termed it insufficient. She tweeted, “A punishment delivered after seven years is not going to change anything. Change will come only if the remaining two culprits are sent to the gallows. Not by saving the accused of rape and murder like Sengar, Chinmyanand, Asharam, Ram Rahim and Nityanand as the governement and its leaders do.

(saat saal baad mili matr is ek saza se kuchh nahi badalne wala, badlaw tab aayega jab balatkaar ke baaki bache doshiyon ko bhi bina deri faansi par chadhaya jaye. Na ki rape-hatya men Senga, Chinmyanand, Asharam, Ram Rahim, Nityanand jaison ko netaon dwara bhagaye aur satta dwara bachaye jane se)

Delhi CM Kejriwal got trolled in the run. Information & technology in-charge of the BJP, Amit Malviya said on twitter: “Now that Nirbhaya’s rapists have been hanged, Arvind Kejriwal can ask for that sewing machine back….”

“This is not the victory of the BJP; rather, (that honour goes) to women who carried forward the movement. The justice will remain incomplete till the culprits of Unnao and Kathua met with their fate,” said Keya Dey, national president of the All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan.
