NEW DELHI — A group of Hindutva goons believed to be belonging to Bajrang Dal on Wednesday beat up a 45-year-old Muslim man and forced him to shout “Jai Shri Ram” as they paraded him on the streets in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media, recorded reportedly by locals, shows the man’s little daughter clinging on to him and begging the attackers to spare him.

While the policemen were rescuing the victim the video shows the men still slapped him.

Raveena Tyagi, a senior Police official in Kanpur, later put out a video on Twitter claiming that the police has filed a case against ”some known and unknown persons” following a written complaint by the victim.

Haider Naqvi, a local journalist working with a national daily who shared the video on his Twitter identified the victim as Absaar Alam, a rickshaw puller  who lives in Kachi basti in Parav Police limits.

He told Clarion India that the Bajrang Dal men were looking for the male members of the family of one Quraisha Begum but since they did not find them, they went to the house of Alam and beat him up.

According to Naqvi, some months back Begum had filed a case over land dispute against the family of Rani Devi. Devi later filed a counter FIR against Begum’s family alleging that its male members are harassing her daughter. She also alleged that the Muslim family was pressurising her daughter to convert.

Few days back she had complained about it to the local Bajrang Dal workers who on Wednesday showed up in the locality. There they thrashed Alam who had nothing to do with the matter between two families.
