NEW DELHI – All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) President Navaid Hamid on Thursday urged Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to set up makeshift army hospitals in Delhi in order to reduce the burden on the collapsing healthcare system amid massive surge of Covid-19 cases.

“Keeping in consideration of the medical requirement in country’s capital and emergent crisis, it is requested to kindly consider to advise the defence forces to set up two more makeshift hospitals for Corona patients in NE Delhi and Central Delhi as these two regions have dense population and rising number of corona cases,” said Hamid in a letter addressed to Singh. He has posted a copy of the letter on Twitter.

India is reporting 3 lakh cases in a day, which is the highest in the world. Hospitals are lacking necessary facilities to treat the Covid patients. Many are dying due to lack of treatment. Delhi is one of the worst affected cities.

According to Hamid, he has suggested to set up makeshift army hospitals in Delhi because “most of the patients from NCR particularly from UP are being rushed to the capital for urgent medical care due to inadequate medical services therein”.

He thinks that “makeshift hospital in East Delhi might also ease burden on limited medical infrastructure in the district and will also cater the visiting patients from UP particularly from the districts of Meerut, Ghaziabad & NOIDA”.

has identified some places in Central and northeast Delhi where army can set up such hospitals. Ramlila Maidan and government schools are some of the places that he thinks are suitable for this purpose.

“If there is practical difficulty in setting up there urgently, either the campus of Government Girls Senior Secondary School at Asaf Ali Road or that of Modern School at Barakhamba Road can be utilised for responding to the medical emergency… Similarly in NE Delhi any campus of a government school can be utilised for setting up a makeshift hospital by armed forces keeping the easy accessibility in consideration as all educational institutions are already closed,” he said.

As per media reports, most of the hospitals in Delhi are cramped with the Covid patients and some of them are lacking oxygen. Some hospitals went to the Delhi High Court seeking oxygen facilities. Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi have been holding the Central government responsible for the ongoing health crisis in the country.
