Mushawarat Demands SC-Monitored Probe Into the Killing of Atiq, Brother

“The echo of the agenda statement of ‘Mitti mien mila denge’ (will make them bite the dust) of CM Yogi Adityanath cannot be ignored in the current circumstances. And also the timing of Atiq’s murder points to a conspiracy to polarise society to gain political mileage in the coming local bodies elections.”

NEW DELHI — All India Muslim Majlis e Mushawarat (AIMMM), the confederation of prominent Muslim organisations and renowned individuals, has strongly condemned the “brutal and sponsored” murder of former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad in police custody by Hindutva goons who raised “Jai Shree Ram” slogans after killing them right under the nose of Uttar Pradesh Police.

A statement issued by the Mushawarat here on Sunday said the pan-Muslim body “joins all who believe in the rule of law in condemning the laxity” and obvious connivance of the UP administration in this cold-blooded murder.

It said the killing has raised a number of questions about the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh. The state “has indeed reached the point of anarchy and needs the urgent attention of the President of India and also requires suo moto cognizance of the gruesome incident by the Supreme Court,” the statement said.

The Mushawarat demanded the constitution of a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry commission to unearth the conspiracy behind the extrajudicial murder.

Questioning the state government’s decision to suspend only some low-level policemen for dereliction of duty, it said action should have been taken against high-ranking officials for their casual planning of the safety of those murdered. “It is also important to point out that any inquiry under the supervision of local men will be a futile and a farce exercise to do only ‘leepa-poti’ (whitewash)”, the statement said.

The intentions, it said, can be gauged by the bursting of celebratory firecrackers by workers of the ruling dispensation at different locations in Uttar Pradesh after the gruesome murder.
