NEW DELHI – The investigation into the death of an engineering student Nishank Rathore by the police in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district has exposed the communal propaganda that he was killed for insulting Prophet Muhammed.

On Sunday, Rathore was found dead at a railway station in Raisen. He was run over by a train at 6 pm. Minutes before his death, some communal messages were sent to his father’s WhatsApp through his mobile phone.

“Rathore sahab bahut bahadur tha aapka beta gustaakh-e-nabi ki ik saja, sar tan se juda saare hindoo kaayaro ko bata dena nabi se gustaakhi nahi (Your son was very brave Rathore Sahab. The only punishment for insulting the Prophet is beheading. Tell every Hindu coward, no insult to the Prophet),” reads the message.

With this message in their hand, people and media aligned with Hindutva ideology had started peddling the propaganda that Rathore was killed because he insulted Prophet Mohammed. However, the police have not found any such thing in its investigation.

Talking to Clarion India about the case, ASP Raisen Amrit Singh Meena said that the police have not found any evidence pointing to communal angle to the death of Rathore.

“We have not found any evidence of murder. Also, there is no evidence of conspiracy. We are still investigating the case. We couldn’t be able to verify the message which was sent through his mobile” said ASP, who is leading the SIT formed to investigate the case.

When asked about the suicide angle, he said the investigation is going on. It has not reached any conclusion.
“We are still investigating the suicide angle. We couldn’t find any eyewitness to it,” he said.

ASP Meena said he could not verify who had sent those messages through his mobile, whether it was him or anyone else. However, he categorically ruled out the murder and conspiracy angle.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that the death appears to be a case of suicide.

“Prima facia it appears to be a case of suicide and the viscera has been preserved… The postmortem report has been studied closely and it clearly says death due to being hit by the train. But the SIT has been formed to look into the viscera, mobile phone, messages and what could be the probable cause,” said Narottam while talking to media.

According to reports, Rathore had taken loans from more than one dozen apps. He also borrowed money from his friends. It is suspected that he had committed suicide due to overburden of loans.

He came from Seoni-Malwa tehsil in Narmadapuram district and was studying computer engineering in Bhopal. On Sunday, he had taken a rented bike from a friend and was headed towards Narmadapuram. He told his friends that he was going to his sister.
