NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi got moist eyes as he turned emotional while addressing health workers of Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency that has been one of the worst Covid-hit cities with hundreds of deaths including many who did not make it to the official toll.

“This virus has … snatched many of loved ones from us. I pay my humble tribute to them and I express my condolences to the families who lost people,” the Prime Minister said, appearing to choke up as he took a long pause.

However, his tears evoked critical reactions including many hilarious ones from a number of Twitter users and even opposition. There were also some serious reactions holding Modi responsible for the crisis.

Youth Congress leader Srivatsa said that Modi was shedding ‘crocodile tears’ after organising crowds in West Bengal elections. “Your crocodile tears won’t bring back loved ones who died gasping for breath. RESIGN & spare us the DRAMA,” he tweeted.

Political analyst Sonali Ranade used several of Adolf Hitler’s quotations where the German dictator had purportedly talked about exploiting weaknesses of the masses.

Gaurav Pandhi, a Congress activist, said in a tweet he knew the prime minister will “pull of this drama of shedding tears sooner or later”. He also tagged his own tweet of last month wherein he had predicted something like this by Modi.

Former bureaucrat and a known Modi critic Jawahar Sircar called it an “Oscar winning performance”.

TRS social media convenor Jagan Patimeedi said India needs vaccines not tears. He made the demand as India has been facing a huge vaccine crunch.

Congress asked whether shedding some tears of guilt today wash away the pain of those who lost their loved ones.

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, “If the Prime Minister sheds some tears in guilt today, will it wash away the pain and tears of those who lost their loved ones?”
