NEW DELHI – The central government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being slammed by politicians as well as civil society for dissolving the J&K Assembly soon after BJP’s rival parties in the state staked claim on Wednesday to form a coalition government. The state Assembly was under suspended animation for the last five months since BJP-PDP government fell.

PDP or People’s Democratic Party’s Mehbooba Mufti sent a fax message to the Governor Satya Pal Malik’s office staking claim for formation of government with the support of Congress and Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference. However, her fax message was not received by the Governor’s office, she said. Around 9 PM, the Governor dissolved the state Assembly.

In a series of tweets, Mehbooba Mufti said: “Since the past five months, regardless of political affiliations, we shared the view that the state assembly be dissolved immediately to avert horse trading & defections. Oddly enough our pleas fell on deaf ears. But who would have thought that the very idea of a grand coalition would give such jitters.”

Taking a jibe over her fax message not received by the Governor’s office, she said: “In today’s age of technology, it is very strange that the fax machine at HE Governor’s residence didn’t receive our fax but swiftly issued one regarding the assembly dissolution.”

The state Assembly had been under suspended animation for the last five months since BJP and People’s Democratic Party got separated leading to the fall of their coalition government. The central government later imposed President’s Rule in the state.

Leading the attack on the Modi government for dissolving the state Assembly when rival parties staked claim to form new government, former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha said, “Will not allow anyone else to form any govt anywhere even if it involves bypassing the constitution. J&K is the latest example of this principle of BJP.”

Many others have termed the Modi govt’s move as attack on democracy.
