One of the victims had tried to escape but he too was caught some kilometres away and brutally thrashed, SDPO Teliamura Sonacharan Jamatia said. They were rushed to a medical college in the capital Agartala where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
It is a case of communal violence, Kumar said, adding that police have opened an investigation into lynchings under section 307 (attempt to muder), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement).
Notably, the police have registered three FIRs at three different police stations including one against the three dead victims as SDPO Teliamura said that a case of cow theft has been registered against the trio at Champahour PS. “The owner of the cows lodged a complaint of theft of cows against them, that is why we filed the case.”
The cases over lynching have been registered at and Kalyanpur PS, Mungiakami PS, Jamatia informed.
“We have not arrested anyone yet as we are trying to identify the three,” he said, adding that they are also awaiting autopsy reports.
The victims are residents of villages which fall in Sonamura police limits in Sepahijala district.
