BAREILLY – A mob assaulted a middle-aged Muslim man after tying his legs and stripping him half-naked over allegations of stealing vegetables in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district.

The incident came to light on Sunday after a few videos of the mob assault on Jalaluddin went viral on social media. One of the videos shows some individuals kicking, pushing and punching in the victim’s face in the presence of a large crowd which watched indifferently. Another video shows the victim lying on the roadside with his legs tied with a rope. The video also showed the victim unknotting the rope later.

In a statement, a police official from Baheri police station said three persons have been arrested over the assault. The police also booked Jalaluddin for stealing vegetables.

“Today on 12 August, a video was brought to our notice which shows that a man is being beaten up after his legs were tied. We were informed that a man named Jalaluddin had stolen a ridge gourd worth 4-5 kg from the field of Chandrapal in Shatras village of Baheri town. On this, Chandrapal, Indrapal, Rupesh and Nanhi Devi chased Jalaluddin and assaulted him,” said the police officer in a video statement.

He said that people from both sides were brought to the police station. A legal action was initiated and a case of assault was registered on the complaint of Jalaluddin. A case of theft was also registered against Jalaluddin on the complaint of Chandrapal.

Social media users posted videos of the assault condemning the incident.

An X user Shahnawaz Ansari said: “In Bareilly, some extremists tied up a Muslim youth “Jalaluddin” and beat him with slippers and kicked him on the charge of plucking vegetables. He kept begging for mercy with folded hands. I appeal to the administration to take immediate action against the culprits, arrest them and give them the harshest punishment”.
