NEW DELHI — Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), General Secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani on Sunday slammed the recent statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on NRC. The Jamiat leader said the Home minister’s statement was against the fundamental and equal rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India.
Referring to the speech the home minister made at a political rally in Kolkata on October 1, he said that it does not augur well for the home minister of India to give such an “irresponsible” statement as any distinction on the basis of religion contradicts the Articles 14-15 of the Indian Constitution and is against the internationally recognised UN declarations.
“It seems that Only Muslims will be kept in detention camps in Assam. If happens so, then it will bring bad name for the nation at the international level and will give tool in the hands of the inimical forces who are bent upon tarnishing the image of the country” said Maulana Madani.
Jamiat leader also raised serious objection over conducting of raids in slum areas of Uttar Pradesh by the Yogi government. “It is a blot upon civilised society to conduct raids in poor people localities and call them infiltrators and insult them. Harassing these poor people on the pretext of apprehending a handful of illegal intruders is highly condemnable and uncalled for.
Explaining the distinction between refugees and intruders, he said that if the government was really moved by the plight of persecuted minorities in India’s neighbourhood, it would be offering to take in the Rohingyas from Myanmar without discriminating against on the basis of religion and if the government was really worried about “intruders” or “infiltration”, then no intruders should be allowed in India at any cost.
Maulana Madani also clarified that there is no issue if NRC is conducted across India. But it appears from the tone and tenor of the home minister that he is targeting Muslims. Such an attitude will generate “hatred and promote enmity” among different section of the Indian society and raise suspicion about the Muslims.
Maulana Madani’s belatedly reaction to the Home Minister is being seen as a damage control exercise who’s statement on NRC is being used by BJP and RSS leaders to justify their move.
