NEW DELHI – While the Bharatiya Janata party is trying to vitiate the atmosphere in Delhi’s Mangolpuri locality where a murder took place last week, various groups have come together to save the situation from turning into a full-fledged communal riot.
Leaders of secular parties like CPI, CPM, Janata Dal, BSP and other peace-loving activists have formed ‘Mangolpuri Ekta Manch’. They are trying to put off communal fire being inflamed by the vested interests. So far the situation in the area is peaceful, said Rampal Bharduwaj, a local leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM).
“Our people have spread in the area appealing to people not to pay attention to rumours and remain peaceful. We are saying to people: There is nothing communal in last week’s murder. Some people are trying to incite communal violence. You have witnessed 1984 riots, what had happened at that time?” Bharduwaj told Clarion India.
On February 10, a 25-year-old youth called Rinku Sharma was killed in a fight between friends turned foes. Five accused, all Muslims, have been arrested. But the police and the deceased’s mother have ruled out any communal angle. However, BJP, Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal have been claiming that he was stabbed because he was part of Ram temple fund collection drive.
Mongolpuri, in the north-west of Delhi, has a mixed population. The Ekta Manch plans to hold a solidarity rally in the area in a day or two, said Bharduwaj.
“We are trying to bring normalcy, but people belonging to the BJP are, perhaps, hell bent on inciting communal riots. We are constantly trying to prevent any such situation. We have met police officials such as DCP and ACP. Police force has been deployed. BJP leaders are constantly visiting the area. Yesterday, Kapil Mishra visited the area. On Wednesday, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta was set to visit the area. We can’t stop them. When there is fire, it should be doused. But they come to inflame it,” said Rampal.
On Wednesday, Secretary of CPM, Delhi unit, C.N. Tiwari, wrote a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner S.N. Shrivastva over bid to communalise the Mangolpuri incident.
“Kapil Mishra and Pragya Thakur visited the place yesterday and gave provocative speeches in order to spread communal disharmony. His incendiary speech last year which triggered the northeast Delhi communal violence has not attracted an FIR from the Delhi Police till date. In fact some self-styled Sadhwis are also vitiating the atmosphere by giving provocative speeches, the video of it is attached for your perusal,” said Tiwari.
CPM also posted a video on Facebook saying that the house of the accused is being damaged by a crowd in the presence of police force. The crowd was led by a Sadhvi, who can be seen in the video giving hate speeches.
On Tuesday, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind’s general secretary Maulana Mahmood also expressed concern over deteriorating law and order situation in Mangolpuri. Through a press release he referred to hate mongering in the area and asked the Union Home Ministry to take action against the hate-mongers.
