NEW DELHI – Opposing the decision of the Modi government to favor Israel at the United Nations, National President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Syed Sadatullah Hussaini urged the government to review its decision to favour Israel against Palestinian human rights body Shahed which sought UN consultative status with UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
He called upon the Government of India to assure the Palestinians of its un-stinted support in the background of India favoring Israel’s position in the United Nations. In a statement to the media issued on Friday, the JIH Chief said ‘’We express our disappointment at the stand taken by the government of India in favor of Israel in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), over Israel’s objection to grant consultative status to a Palestinian human rights NGO. This positive vote favoring Israel will be construed as a departure for India from its stated decades’ old policy of supporting the Palestinian cause”.
Highlighting the historic role of India always standing by Palestine, he said that the new stand of India may hamper India’s ties with Arab countries. “This shift in our approach towards endorsing Israeli hardline policy aimed at crushing all voices of dissent and criticism that expose Israel’s continued occupation and human rights abuses will be a huge setback for the Palestinians who bank on India for supporting its struggle for an independent state. It may also hamper our improving ties with oil-rich Arab countries. The Government of India must assure Palestinians of its continued un-stinted support and re-look at its decision to support Israel in diplomatic and international forums. India has always fought imperialist powers and supported countries in their struggle against imperialism and apartheid,” Hussaini said.
He also called on the human rights activists to raise the voice against unjust occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel.
“We appeal to the justice and peace-loving people of India to raise their voice using all legal and constitutional means against the unjust occupation, unlawful construction of colonies and grave injustice meted out to Palestine at the hands of Israel and hope the government of India introspects over its unjustified support to Israel,” he said.
