NEW DELHI — The President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Syed Sadatullah Hussaini has condemned the brutal police action on Sunday in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in which hundreds of students were injured and the Jamia Masjid was desecrated.

In a communique to the media, Syed Sadatullah said, “Jamaat-e-Islami Hind condemns the brutality unleashed by the Delhi police on the students of Jamia yesterday night. There was unprovoked violence perpetrated on innocent students by the Delhi Police who fired indiscriminately, carried out vicious attacks in campus, and committed acts of arson under full public view and the media glare.

“The police barged into the JMI library and beat up students indiscriminately and ruthlessly. They entered the JMI Masjid, desecrated and vandalized it and hit the students offering “namaz”. All this blatant violence was carried out without the permission of the University authorities. The Delhi Police then detained and took many seriously injured students to a police station where they were held without any medical care for several hours.

“There are allegations that the police have sexually assaulted female students, burnt buses and carried out these brazen attacks on students along with rogues and anti-social elements.”

The Jamaat Chief further said: “There are reports of similar violence and vandalism carried out by the UP Police on students in AMU. We condemn this vindictive action on the student community by the police and hold the government of India responsible for this deplorable act. This episode is bound to invite international condemnation sullying the image of our country.”

“A civilized country cannot have such brutal and unprofessional police force. We demand an independent judicial probe of this incident and punitive action against errant police personnel. We express our solidarity with the student community who are fighting for their constitutionally guaranteed democratic right of dissent and urge all justice-loving citizens of our country to support the students of JMI, AMU and others in their fight for justice. Jamaat will also carry out an independent fact finding civilian inquiry by a panel of eminent former judges and police officers”, Jamaat chief said.
