Farha Nishat’s achievement reflects resilience and determination amidst adversity

NEW DELHI – Amid the unending trauma of prolonged incarceration and legal battles for student activist Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots case, a moment of pride has brought wide smiles to the faces of his family members. Sharjeel Imam’s younger sister, Farha Nishat, has successfully cleared the 32nd Bihar Judicial Services Examination and has been appointed a judge. The achievement has brought joy and pride to the family during a challenging time.
Farha’s accomplishment was announced on social media by her brother, Muzammil Imam, who shared his pride and optimism about her future contributions to justice. “Life is a balance. While my brother is fighting against oppression in jail, my sister will now deliver justice against oppression as a judge. I hope she ensures no innocent person suffers during her tenure,” Muzammil wrote on social media.
Muzammil Imam, Farha’s elder brother, is a politician and former general secretary and spokesperson of the Janata Dal (United). He has also worked as a journalist. Despite the controversies surrounding Sharjeel Imam, the family has stood together, emphasising their commitment to justice and societal values.
Along with the family, the whole of Bihar’s Jehanabad is feeling proud of her achievement. Farah has become a source of inspiration, especially for women and the younger generation.
Farha received her primary education in Kako village. Her mother, Akbari Khatoon, is a housewife, and her father Nishat Akhtar is a retired government officer. Farha completed her law studies in 2018 at Raipur’s Hidayatullah National University after clearing the CLAT exam. After this, she worked as a research assistant in the Supreme Court and understood the judicial process closely. This stint in the Supreme Court helped her a great deal.
Sharjeel Imam, a former student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was arrested in January 2020 under charges of sedition and provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He is accused of delivering provocative speeches at Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University during the anti-CAA protests, which allegedly incited violence during the Delhi riots. His case remains a subject of intense debate and legal scrutiny.

According to an ABP News report, Muzammil Imam has consistently supported Sharjeel, often sharing messages defending him. In an earlier post, he described Sharjeel as ‘an idealist who prioritises society, humanity, and the nation over himself.’ He reportedly stated that Sharjeel’s only fault is being passionately committed to his beliefs.
