ALIGARH – Anger and concern gripped the campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Monday as students staged a protest against the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Hundreds of students demonstrated on campus, raising slogans and submitting a memorandum addressed to President Droupadi Murmu.

The memorandum highlighted the students’ deep concern over the incident, which they claimed reflects a growing atmosphere of anarchy in the country. It also pointed out the neglect of laws aimed at preserving heritage buildings, asserting that such negligence contributes to societal unrest.

Speaking about the memorandum, an AMU student said, “An atmosphere of chaos is being created by those who disregard constitutional values. The violence in Sambhal is a reflection of this, and we demand immediate action against the culprits.”

The memorandum urged the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognisance of the violence, emphasising the need for swift and impartial justice. “If strict measures are not taken soon, the unrest could escalate,” the students warned.

A significant part of the students’ demands centred around the preservation of old buildings, with claims that laws protecting heritage are being undermined. “The Constitution has provisions to safeguard historical structures, but recent actions suggest otherwise,” a student leader remarked.

The AMU campus echoed with slogans stressing community unity and brotherhood. The demonstration culminated in the submission of the memorandum to the university’s Proctor, Profr Wasim Ali, to be forwarded to the President.

“It wasn’t a large protest; about 25-30 students handed over a memorandum related to the Sambhal incident,” Prof Ali said.

The Sambhal violence, which reportedly claimed several lives, has sparked outrage across the country. AMU students are among those calling for accountability and peace. They urged authorities to act decisively to address the root causes of such incidents, ensuring justice and stability.

The protest at AMU reflects growing concerns over social unrest and the importance of upholding constitutional principles in turbulent times.
