ISLAMABAD: Adding a new chapter to the history of the subcontinent, cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan on Friday as he bagged 176 votes in the floor test for Leader of the House in the 342-seat National Assembly. Khan needed a simple majority of 172 to take power.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Khan will take oath as the 22nd Prime Minister of the country on Saturday.
In the polling for the Leader of the House, former captain of Pakistan cricket team, Imran Khan left Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Shehbaz Sharif much behind — at 96 votes. Unhappy with the candidature of Sharif, Pakistan People’s Party abstained from the voting process.
In the general elections held last month, Khan’s PTI had emerged as the single largest party. With several like-minded parties coming to his fold, Khan’s hard struggle on the political pitch for 22 years got success.
