NEW DELHI — In blatant disregard for legal injunctions, the unauthorised construction of flats on ‘disputed’ land owned by Jamia Millia Islamia persists, with work reportedly continuing under the cover of darkness. The contentious area spans the southern section of Jamia’s Mujeeb Bagh ground and the northern side adjacent to Okhla Vihar.
Approximately 2100 yards of land, currently embroiled in a court dispute and under the ownership of Jamia Millia Islamia, has become the site of contentious construction. Despite receiving a court-issued stay order in favour of Jamia Millia Islamia, construction activities on the land persist. The university administration claims to have informed relevant authorities, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Iqbal Hussain, who allegedly endorsed the construction.
Master Haris-ul-Haq Jamاi, Secretary of Jamia School Teachers Association, expressed concern over the unauthorised construction and urged immediate intervention to safeguard the Jamia land. The opposition party has called for an immediate halt to the construction work and insisted that a complaint be filed against those responsible for violating the court order.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Iqbal Hussain, is reportedly associated with the opposing party and is accused of supporting the construction activities on the contested land. The ongoing legal dispute between Jamia Millia Islamia and Mahendra Singh Saini adds another layer of complexity to the situation. However, the university has not provided any official statement on the matter.
Jamia Millia Islamia’s stance on the construction activities is expected to become clearer once an official response is issued. The community awaits clarification on the university’s position and any measures taken to address the unauthorised construction on the disputed land. Authorities are urged to swiftly investigate and take appropriate action to uphold the rule of law.
