DEHRADUN – Uttarakhand police have launched an investigation into the functioning of Hyderabad-based NGOYouth Courage, following a viral video purportedly showing cash being distributed to individuals in the violence-stricken areas of Haldwani.
The man identified in the video, Salman Khan, is allegedly linked to the NGO which has come under scrutiny as authorities delve into the source and purpose of the funds distributed.
Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Narain Meena said all details related to Salman have been sought, including documents of the NGO, its funding sources and income tax returns. The police also wanted to know the amount of money distributed in Banbhulpura area of the city.

The unrest in Banbhulpura erupted when authorities were engaged in demolishing a madrassa, resulting in six fatalities and injuries to 250 policemen. In connection with the violence on February 8, the police have apprehended 74 individuals thus far.
“Two days ago, a video circulated on social media depicting a young man distributing cash to residents of Banbhulpura, particularly to the relatives of the deceased referred to as martyrs,” said Nainital police in a statement issued on Friday. The video also showed significant amount being handed out to other affected individuals.
While the authenticity of the video could not be independently verifies, Hyderabad resident Salman was detained at the Banbhulpura police station for questioning. Following several hours of interrogation, Salman was released on Thursday with a requirement to be available for further investigation.
Authorities have intensified scrutiny on Salman’s activities, including efforts to ascertain the amount of money brought to Haldwani. Donors to Hyderabad Youth Courage are also under investigation, with measures underway to seize the organisation’s accounts.
The dissemination of the viral video prompted heightened attention from law enforcement agencies, emphasising the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cash distribution in the aftermath of the Haldwani violence.
