HARDOI – Former MLA Abdullah Azam, currently serving his sentence at the Hardoi District Jail, expressed his grievances during a video conferencing session held in the MP MLA court in Rampur. Abdullah, son of former MLA and SP National General Secretary Muhammad Azam Khan, raised concerns about the conditions he is facing while in custody.
Abdullah, who was brought to Hardoi District Jail on October 22, 2023, after being found guilty in a case involving two birth certificates, stated that he is being compelled to sleep on wet floors. Moreover, despite the severe cold weather, the jail administration is providing cold water from a tank for daily bathing, posing health risks.
The former MLA’s appearance in court via video conferencing was related to questions about his possession of two passports. During the proceedings, Abdullah seized the opportunity to address the court about his living conditions. He pleaded, “My Lord, the jail administration is forcing me to sleep on the wet floor. Despite repeated requests, my barracks have not been changed. Additionally, I am being given cold water from the tank for my daily bath, which is hazardous to my health in this extreme cold.”
Taking serious note of these complaints, the court has promptly sought a detailed report from the jail administration regarding the alleged negligence in providing basic amenities. In response, the court has issued orders mandating the jail administration to adhere to all facilities as outlined in the jail manual.
However, both the Jail Superintendent and Jailer have remained tight-lipped on the matter, refusing to provide any comments. The case against Abdullah Azam involving two passports is still pending in court, adding further complexity to the situation.
