Fewer Muslim Men Suffer From Heart Disease, Cancer Than Hindus, Christians: Report

NEW DELHI — Compared to Hindu and Christian men in the age group of 15-49 years, fewer Muslim men are suffering from diabetes, heart disease and cancer, reveals the latest government report on health. The prevalence of three diseases is highest in Christian men. But prevalence of heart disease is highest in Muslim women compared to Hindu and Christian women.

Some 1.7% Hindu men and 3.6% Christian men are suffering with diabetes while it is 1.6% among Muslim men. While 1% Hindu men and 2.4% Christian men have heart disease, 0.9% Muslim men have this disease, says the National Family Health Survey 2015-16 which was released recently.

The cases of cancer are also more in Hindu men (0.3%) and Christian men (0.9%) than Muslim men (0.1%).

Overall, the prevalence of diabetes is 2% among both men and women in the age group of 15-49 years in the country. Just 1% people have any heart disease and less than 1% people have cancer.

However, a comparison among women of these three communities on the account of the three diseases reveals some startling facts. Here are a few:

  • Prevalence of diabetes, heart disease and cancer is higher in Muslim women than Muslim men
  • More Muslim women are suffering with diabetes than Hindu women
  • Prevalence of heart disease is highest in Muslim women compared to Hindu and Christian women
