NEW DELHI – The Delhi Meat Merchant Association has voiced strong displeasure over the persisting issues at the Ghazipur Slaughterhouse, urging immediate intervention of Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) officials to address the mounting challenges.

Irshad Baba Qureshi, general secretary of the association, claimed that DMC’s inaction is exacerbating the situation.

According to Qureshi, the Ghazipur Slaughterhouse, formerly owned by Alana Company, underwent a change in management. However, since the transition to the new company, there has been a notable lack of progress. Operational inefficiencies, including frequent machinery breakdowns, have led to daily disputes, causing significant delays in the processing of meat products. Traders are grappling with adverse conditions, compounded by reported lapses in the performance of the employees.

Qureshi highlighted the broader issue of Ghazipur Mandi, explaining that the problem has persisted since the time when the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was under the City Development Monitoring Committee (CDMC). Financial constraints have hampered essential work in the area, and despite the merger of the three municipal corporations (MCDs) a year ago, no funds have been allocated for maintenance.

The association pointed out that the corporation’s lack of investment has resulted in financial losses for both the corporation and the local shopkeepers. Additionally, the issue of illegal slaughtering persists, further complicating matters. Shopkeepers, some of whom travel from distant locations, are compelled to endure prolonged waiting times, resulting in substantial economic losses.

Qureshi called on the corporation to either ensure the current management is equipped to run the slaughterhouse efficiently or take direct control of operations.
In a bid to find a comprehensive solution, the Delhi Meat Merchant Association has formally requested the commissioner to conduct a thorough survey or establish a committee for a detailed inspection. The association hopes that this initiative will lead to a comprehensive report, offering viable solutions that benefit both the corporation and the traders while ensuring the supply of clean and hygienic meat to the public.
